Elk, close up, Sinkyone Wilderness, northern California.

Horny Toad, middle right - their camouflage prolongs their life.

I took this from about 150' with a disposable 35mm camera - Sow and Cub - Sequoia N.P.'s backcountry beyond Alta Meadow.  They remained nearby for over twenty minutes.  The two bears first appeared at 50' to 60' distance, then moved slowly away, gradually moving up-slope.  I stood my ground, offering no threat, and carefully observing the mother's body language for signs of distress or concern.  I would never have intentionally placed myself this close to any bear, and highly recommend that no one purposely get this close.
