WHY TAKE OUR COURSES?

ZION Wilderness Survival School, LLC

Not to resort to scare tactics, but the following October 22, 2004 Newspaper article should help to illustrate why one MUST understand the potential dangers present in the wilderness, and have sufficient knowledge and training to be able to respond to them.  In short, do you wish  to learn how to stay alive, or are you willing to let nature decide whether you live or die?

In the following case, some of the trapped hikers and climbers failed  to anticipate the wintry conditions that would envelope them and threaten their lives.  They did not know the environs in which they intended to "play."  Some failed to carry the necessary gear for an "unexpected" snow storm, but I was pleased to learn that most were prepared.  The groups left their itineraries with family members; they hunkered down to conserve their strength, food and body temperatures, and they kept their heads about them.  Any experienced Sierra backpacker knows to be prepared for snow anytime after September 1 when at elevations over 8,000.

The desert can kill.  The mountains can kill.  Canyons can kill.  Rivers can kill.  But, only you can prepare yourself to SURVIVE!

These incidents took place where I have enjoyed many safe and wonderful backpacking outings - the Sierra Mountain areas of Dinkey Lakes and the Kaiser Wilderness, Ansel Adams Wilderness, Mount Whitney Zone and Yosemite.  My first solo winter survival outing took place near Shaver Lake.
