ABC's WORLD NEWS TONIGHT, WITH PETER JENNINGS
ZION Wilderness Survival School, LLC by HikingwithMike.com was contacted on 6/22/05 by ABC Field Correspondent Miguel Marquez for expert information and tips on surviving being lost in the wilderness. Mr. Marquez was doing a story for World News Tonight, anchored by Peter Jennings, on the successful search and rescue operation that found 11-year-old boy scout, Brennan Hawkins. The boy disappeared from his Boy Scout camp in northern Utah's Uinta National Forest, and was lost for four days before being discovered by an independent searcher. Mr. Marquez's piece aired on the World News Tonight program on 6/22/05.
We strongly voiced our opinion that youth groups, such as the Boy Scouts, should ensure that every youth carries a pocket emergency kit, which would include, as a minimum, an emergency whistle, a space blanket, waterproof matches, water treatment tablets, an emergency poncho and a small flashlight with one spare battery. Each youth should be taught how to use each item before going on outings in the wilderness.
UTAH LOCAL TELEVISION - KSL - CHANNEL 5 - SUMMER 2006
Radio Interview - Mike Myers was interviewed regarding the rash of deaths involving both hikers and two participants in Challenge and Outdoor Skills courses. Three hiking deaths involved heat related situations, as did the death of a young woman in an Outward Bound course and the death of a young man in a Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS) "Challenge" course. Each death showed how easily one can succumb to heat problems, dehydration, and related physiological conditions. The need for constant and alert supervision in outdoor schools was stressed by Mike. The extra danger of Solo hiking during extreme conditions was also stressed. Sorry, but no written transcript of the interview is available.
CBS NATIONAL RADIO - DECEMBER 7, 2006 INTERVIEW
REGARDING JAMES KIM WILDERNESS ORDEAL
