GEAR CHECKLIST

 

Note:  Items in red are mandatory & must be carried by each participant!  

Note:  This list applies to School Base camp Courses, only.  Go to GEAR for Backpacking Gear List. 

 

 

Large Duffle Bag for personal Gear

·        Emergency Survival Kit (see below or Mike's Manual for contents) - required for all Courses.  Only items in "red" are mandatory.

·        Camp shoes or sandals- sandals double for water crossings

·        Boots suitable to harsh surfaces

·        Clothing suitable to climate & weather (layers)

·        Two extra pair of wool socks / two pair liner socks

·        Pocketknife – Swiss Army type or Multi-tool

·        Wide-brimmed hat

·        Trowel and Toilet paper

·        Personal Mess kit (cup, dish, fork, spoon, knife, etc.)

·        Waterproof matches

·        Sleeping bag & mat

·        Stuff pillow or inflatable pillow

·        Daypack (Fanny Packs will not hold the required gear)

·        Camera & film

·        Binoculars – optional

·        Global Satellite Positioning device

·        Flashlight & extra batteries

·        Large plastic trash bag

·        Pack cover for rain (large trash bag works)

·        Rain gear or poncho

·        Map, trail guide and Permits in waterproof bag

·        The Complete Hiking, Backpacking & Wilderness Survival Manual by Mike - will be provided upon arrival at school or mailed to you in advance.

·        Pen and Paper

·        Hiking stick (s)

·        Water bottles - at least two quart size bottles or equivalent capacity bladder

·        Spare glasses - Contact lens juice and stuff

·        Small towel, toothbrush & paste, hairbrush, razor, biodegradable liquid camp soap

·        Gaiters – snow or mud type

 

Warm weather (no chance of freezing temperatures)

·        Salt Tablets or Electrolyte replacement drink powder

·        Sunscreen

·        Sunglasses

 

Cold weather (chance of or certain freezing temperatures)

·        Gaiters

·        Ski hat/stocking cap

·        Warm gloves  (water repellent)

·        Synthetic, moisture-wicking liner gloves

·        Balaclava (head stocking)

·        Sunglasses

·        Sunscreen

·        More food

·        Cold-weather clothing – synthetic thermals, fleece pants & shirts; parka


EMERGENCY SURVIVAL KIT OR PACK (keep with you at all times): 

Compass; Map; Water treatment tablets – iodine; First aid kit; 50'rope; Emergency candle - great as fire start aid; Waterproof matches; flint (scrape knife blade against it to create sparks); Butane lighter as backup; Signal Mirror; Good pocket knife (Swiss Army style); Emergency solar blanket; Emergency tent (optional) (plastic fold-up); Emergency poncho; Emergency whistle; 25' of Duct Tape; Sunscreen (optional); 1 pair wool socks; Small flashlight & spare batteries; 2 Granola Bars or Power Bars; Medication you may need, including Aspirin or non-aspirin pain killer; Extra bootlaces (may second as small ropes); sewing kit & safety pins; a yard of thin wire; small bag of salt; Cellular Phone - note that most of the time they will be useless in the mountains, unless you have the very expensive iridium type; check with local Ranger Station. 

 

IMPORTANT!!!

FOOD REQUIRED – Each participant should bring breakfast, lunch and snacks for each day in the outdoors.  We will provide all Suppers.  In some cases, when special arrangements are made ahead of time, we will provide all food and drink.  Please advise of any special dietary needs.  

CAUTION – AIRLINES WILL NOT TRANSPORT STOVE FUEL OR BEAR REPELLENT SPRAY DUE TO EXPLOSION HAZARDS.  YOU MUST CHECK KNIVES & MULTI TOOLS WITH BAGGAGE!
